Crohn’s Care Kids 2019
Crohn’s care began with researching the disease and learning that Canada has the highest recorded rate of cases in the world as well as the number of cases in children. I then set out to find the most convenient way for those struggling with Crohn’s disease to monitor symptoms and lifestyle. A tablet app was created for children with the disease to help them better understand the condition, and what they have to monitor and offer a way to communicate their symptoms to caregivers.
The Process
Character Design
Designing the kid's app started with coming up with a concept that would allow for interactivity and keep children’s attention. This is where the character design of the happy intestine started. The character started with a happy /healthy version of the large intestine and moved on to other incarnations of the intestines like backed up, upset, and swollen versions.

Layout
Following creating the characters I began to lay out the app it was important to make things functional for children so avoiding putting buttons on the bottom of the screen to avoid accidentally hitting them was crucial.
Making buttons large and easy to see and touch was important to adapt to the motor functions of a child. Children are drawn to more primary bright colours so those were also incorporated.
The app has four easy-to-use categories one for tracking meals, one for how the intestines feel, one for tracking bowel movements, and one for general pain. Interactive feedback screens were also designed with the intent of having animated features.
The secondary screens were then created for prototyping, this would allow for an accurate working experience. There is a portion of the app that is for parents so it is designed for adults..

Icons
The icons used need to be easily understood by children, going off of the icons I had created for the adult mode colour was added to be more visually accurate for children.
